TL;DRIn 2026 ChatGPT officially became an advertising platform. On January 16, 2026 OpenAI published its ad approach; on February 9, 2026 it started the test: ads shown only to logged-in adult US users on the free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education stay ad-free. Ads appear at the end of the answer, are clearly labeled “sponsored”, and per OpenAI don't influence the answers. The test rolled out to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, then UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea. Europe (including Romania) is not in the pilot yet.
The way people find products has shifted faster than most stores are ready for. More and more buyers no longer open ten Google results; they ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot or Google AI Mode directly: “which is the best focus supplement?”, “what brand of X do you recommend?”. The assistant returns a few names, and any brand that isn't in that list doesn't exist for that buyer.
Below we walk through what OpenAI actually said, how the format works, what it means for advertisers, and what you can do right now to prepare your brand.
Why OpenAI introduced ads in ChatGPT
The official argument, signed by Fidji Simo (OpenAI), is simple: ChatGPT is used by hundreds of millions of people, and keeping the free and Go tiers fast and accessible costs enormously in infrastructure. Ads fund that access, so more people can use AI with fewer limits or for free.
In parallel, OpenAI expanded the low-cost ChatGPT Go plan ($8/month) to the US and every market where ChatGPT is available. The underlying idea: a diversified revenue model where ads fund free access, and paid subscriptions remain the ad-free option.
Official timeline (OpenAI sources)
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| Jan 16, 2026 | OpenAI publishes the principles and its approach to advertising. Announces intent to test ads in the US, on Free and Go. |
| Feb 9, 2026 | The ad test goes live in ChatGPT, in the US, for logged-in adult users on Free and Go. |
| Mar 26, 2026 | “Encouraging” results (no impact on trust, low ad-rejection rate). Announces expansion to Canada, Australia, New Zealand. |
| May 7, 2026 | Announces pilot expansion to UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea. |
The EU (including Romania) is not on the announced pilot list yet. That doesn't mean “never”, it means “not yet”, and it's reason enough to understand the mechanism ahead of time.
How an ad looks and works in ChatGPT
The launch format tested by OpenAI is a sponsored recommendation shown at the end of the answer, when a product or service is relevant to the current conversation. The ad is clearly labeled “sponsored” and visually separated from the organic answer.
OpenAI's own example: if you're looking up recipes, you may see an ad for a meal kit or a food delivery service. If you're discussing a trip to Santa Fe, you may see a sponsored stay, and in a conversational interface you can even ask follow-up questions about the offer before deciding.
How your ad choice is picked during the test:
- The current conversation topic
- Your chat history
- Your prior interactions with ads (what you dismissed, what you opened)
If multiple advertisers match, ChatGPT surfaces the most relevant to your conversation.
The 5 principles OpenAI commits to
OpenAI built the ad program around five commitments. They matter because they define exactly what you can and can't do as an advertiser:
Advertising supports access to AI, not the other way around.
Ads don't influence answers. The answer stays optimized to be useful to the user; the ad is always separated and labeled.
Advertisers don't have access to conversations, history, memories or personal data. They receive only aggregated data (impressions, clicks). OpenAI explicitly says it doesn't sell data to advertisers.
Users can turn off personalization, delete ad data and see why they see a given ad. There's always an ad-free option (paid plan; or, on Free, an opt-out in exchange for fewer daily messages).
OpenAI says it does not optimize for “time spent” in ChatGPT and puts user trust ahead of revenue.
What's forbidden (for now) and privacy guardrails
Boundaries you should know from the start, so you don't build a strategy on something that isn't allowed:
- No ads to minors. Ads don't show in accounts where the user is declared or estimated to be under 18.
- No ads near sensitive topics. Ads don't appear next to sensitive or regulated topics: health, mental health, politics.
- No “narrow” targeting. OpenAI says it will keep guardrails against overly fine targeting, and will be selective about who is admitted to the advertiser program, to reduce scam and misleading-ad risk.
- Aggregated data only to advertisers: how many impressions, how many clicks. No conversation content.
What it means for advertisers and your business
For brands, the key message is that ChatGPT becomes a new “bottom-of-funnel” channel by nature: people use it exactly when they compare options, weigh ideas, and get close to a decision. A well-placed ad catches the user in the moment of intent, not in passive scroll.
A few honest calibrations, so expectations stay realistic:
- Access is through OpenAI. Interested businesses sign up at openai.com/advertisers for updates and access as the program expands.
- Limited formats at first. OpenAI started with a single format (sponsored recommendation under the answer) and says it will add formats, objectives and buying models over time.
- No official pricing yet. OpenAI hasn't published a rate card. The figures circulating in the trade press (CPC around $3-5, reported CPM around $25, plus a Conversions API for attribution) are industry estimates, not OpenAI-confirmed. Treat them as reference, not fixed truth.
- Not in Europe yet. If you only sell in the EU, you can't run ChatGPT ads today. But you can start positioning for visibility in AI answers (the organic side).
Paid ads vs. organic AI visibility: don't confuse them
Ads in ChatGPT = paid, labeled, separated from the answer.
Important thing many people conflate: ads in ChatGPT don't push your brand into the organic answer, because OpenAI explicitly guarantees answer independence.
To appear in the organic answer of ChatGPT (i.e. be recommended naturally when someone asks “what's the best X agency” or “what product do I need for Y”), that's a separate discipline: optimization for AI answer engines (AEO / GEO). The two complement each other, but they're worked on differently. In a market like Europe, where paid ads aren't available yet, organic AI visibility is the lever you can build right now.
What to do now: practical checklist
If you target pilot markets (US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, South Korea), explore signing up at openai.com/advertisers. If you sell in the EU, switch to prep mode, not execution.
Even if you can't run today, signing up for the OpenAI advertiser program keeps you in the loop when your market opens, and gives you a head start over competitors.
Clear, structured content with answers to your customers' real questions, verifiable data and authority. That's how you become the brand ChatGPT naturally recommends, free, today.
Ads in ChatGPT let the user ask questions about the product. You need clear messaging, price, benefits and differentiators that “hold up” in conversation, not just a pretty banner.
ChatGPT Ads is an emerging channel, with format and pricing in flux. Meta Ads, Google Ads and TikTok Ads are the engines still bringing in the sales now. You test the new channel with a test budget, you don't move house.
